Leading Australian digital signage provider Amped Digital has delivered a multi-zone LED digital signage system at His Majesty's Theatre in Perth, replacing the State Heritage-listed venue's static printed banners with a modern, cloud-managed display network. The deployment marks one of the more technically demanding heritage-building signage installations completed in Australia's performing arts sector in recent years.

The 1904-built theatre on Hay Street is one of Perth CBD's most recognizable cultural landmarks. Its team approached Amped Digital with a brief to modernize event promotion across the facade and foyer without compromising the building's architectural character, and to give non-technical marketing staff full control of the resulting system.

The challenge of digital signage in a heritage CBD environment

Performing arts venues operate on fast-moving schedules, and for years His Majesty's Theatre had relied on printed banners that required print production lead times, physical installation, and interdepartmental coordination every time the program changed. The venue had no practical way to promote a full season at once, or to respond quickly when a show shifted.

The site itself added complexity. Any display mounted above Hay Street, one of Perth CBD's busiest pedestrian corridors, requires city approval, footpath zoning during installation, and independent engineer certification for structural displays above public space. Heritage listings layer further constraints on every mounting decision.

A multi-zone solution built around the venue

The installed system spans three zones: the external Hay Street facade, the theatre foyer, and interior wayfinding and promotional points. For the outdoor facade, the team specified Samsung outdoor IP-rated digital poster displays with 3,500 nit brightness panels and polarized viewing technology, paired with custom high-brightness LED displays designed to lift the venue's street presence after dark. Ambient light sensors automatically adjust brightness based on time of day and surrounding light levels, keeping content readable from morning through to late evening.

Content runs on BrightSign media players and is managed through Navori, a cloud-based content management platform that hands day-to-day control to the theatre's marketing and events team. Staff can schedule, publish, and zone content across the network without needing technical support.

"Heritage venues present some of the most demanding installation environments in the country, and His Majesty's Theatre sits in the middle of a busy CBD pedestrian corridor on top of that," said Matt Steedman, director at Amped Digital. "Our job was to engineer a system that respects the building, satisfies the City of Perth's safety requirements, and still gives the marketing team a platform they can actually use day to day."

Custom engineering and a 1 week installation

Installing above-pedestrian areas on a heritage building required purpose-built engineering. Amped Digital developed custom outdoor signage mounts and brackets specifically for the project, working alongside specialist engineering and design firms to certify the structures before installation began. Sections of public footpath were temporarily zoned in line with the city's requirements during the works.

Despite managing heritage constraints, council approvals, public safety obligations, and bespoke structural engineering, the company completed the full installation from site access to commissioning in approximately one week. The result is a clear shift from a single static banner to multiple rolling digital promotions running simultaneously across the facade and foyer, allowing the venue to promote an entire season at once and refresh content as the program evolves.

A proven partner for Australia's most demanding signage environments

Ongoing support includes remote monitoring, remote diagnostics, and system training for the theatre team, with ad hoc on-site assistance available where required. The company designs its systems for reliability to minimize attendance at venues with limited access windows and demanding performance schedules.

With a portfolio spanning large-format LED facades, performing arts venues, retail, and QSR networks across Australia, Amped Digital continues to build long-term partnerships grounded in trust and proven results.
