When it comes to news, the biggest stories last year were an eclectic bunch, such as one story that looked at the Shinnecock Indian Nation's legal struggle to keep their digital signage up and running, which was featured on the "Daily Show with Trevor Noah" to Kroger's partnership with Microsoft for shelf edge solutions.

Last time, we looked at the top 10 articles posted in 2019 on Digital Signage Today. Now, we are going to take a look at what news items really grabbed readers' attention in the last year of the 2010s.

When it comes to news, the biggest stories last year were an eclectic bunch, such as one story that looked at the Shinnecock Indian Nation's legal struggle to keep their digital signage up and running, which was featured on the "Daily Show with Trevor Noah" to Kroger's partnership with Microsoft for shelf edge solutions. Other stories looked at product launches, such as cloud management platforms and 4K tools.

10. Eatsa releases product line for virtual restaurants

Eatsa, the restaurant technology provider, has announced a new suite of products for virtual restaurants and delivery-only operators.

According to the news release, eatsa's combined omnichannel intelligent queue software, kitchen management system and recently launched pickup system streamline operations for onsite staff and improve delivery logistics.

9. 3M, Elo settle patent infringement lawsuit

3M Company and 3M Innovative Properties Company recently settled a patent infringement lawsuit brought against Elo  Inc. The suit alleged that certain Elo PCAP touch products infringed on 3M's metal mesh conductor film patents, according to a press release.

3M did not disclose the terms of the settlement but emphasized that it would continue to protect its patent rights.

8. Toppan Printing uses E Ink Advanced Color ePaper display for POP display

Toppan Printing Co., based in Tokyo, has used E Ink's Advanced Color ePaper display to develop a point-of-purchase sign. The ACeP display can showcase more than 32,000 colors to act as an alternative to a traditional paper display, according to a press release.

The POP display uses a content management system so users can update it via smart phone or PC.

7. HiMirror to launch smart mirror update

HiMirror plans to launch its Enterprise version of its HiMirror interactive smart mirror. The device can analyze a user's face and deliver beauty tips based on information on the user's skin, hydration and other factors, according to a press release.

With the Enterprise version, end users can compare user's historical skin data and provide product recommendations based on the analysis. It can also push digital signage content to promote products and offers. The version also comes with a MakeupStudio augmented reality feature, which customers can use to virtually "try on" different makeup products, according to the release.

6. BrightSign launches cloud management platform for digital signage networks

BrightSign has announced its BSN.cloud player management platform, powered by BrightSign OS 8.0, a digital signage operating system. The platform consists of three parts: Control Cloud; Management Cloud and Content Cloud, according to a press release.

Customers can use the Control Cloud's B-Deploy feature to configure players remotely, which helps reduce installation times. For smaller deployments, end users can simply use a QR code on the display to set up the media player via mobile phone. The Control Cloud also offers real-time health information for the player and can adjust configurations and update OS in real time remotely.

5. Aopen unveils 4K Chromebox

AOPEN has unveiled its Chromebox Commercial 2 powered by Google Chrome OS from the cloud. The Chromebox can control one 4K screen at 60 Hertz or two 4K displays at 30 Hertz, according to a press release.

4. Mood Media appoints David Hoodis as CEO

Mood Media, a in-store media solutions provider, has appointed David Hoodis to serve as CEO, following the retirement of Steven Richards, former president and CEO. Hoodis has more than 30 years of experience in leadership and operations in the retail space, according to a press release.

3.  Kroger partners with Microsoft for shelf edge, IoT solutions

The Kroger Co. has partnered with Microsoft Corp. to test shelf edge displays and internet of things solutions at two stores in Monroe, Ohio, and Redmond, Washington. The grocery chain will use Microsoft's Azure platform along with IoT sensors to create the experience, according to a press release.

Kroger will use its Enhanced Displays for Grocery Environment shelving system to replace traditional paper tags with digital displays, which can showcase pricing, promotions and dietary information. Microsoft will connect the EDGE system with Kroger's mobile checkout Scan, Bag and Go program using Azure AI.

2.  Daktronics to unveil LED street furniture

Daktronics is getting ready to launch its LED street furniture solution, which will feature 2.9-millimeter line spacing for OOH advertising. It will also soon unveil its Optica series of outdoor displays and a double sided digital banner as well, according to a press release.

1. 'Daily Show with Trevor Noah' to feature digital billboard for Shinnecock Indian Nation

Comedy's Central's show "The Daily Show with Trevor Noah' will feature the Shinnecock Indian Nation's digital billboard on Sunrise Highway in Hampton Bays, New York. The tribe has deployed two 61-foot tall billboards to raise advertising revenue, despite a lawsuit from the state of New York, according to a report by Newsday.

Officials claim that the billboards conflict with the atmosphere of the highway, which is a common path for tourists. The state has sued the tribe, which ignored a cease and desist order from the Department of Transportation. The Shinnecock Nation has claimed that the Native American land is sovereign territory and is contesting the lawsuit in the New York Supreme Court.
