Digital signage traditionally only delivers pre-made content. In other words, a company, individual or agency will design content for the display and then pre-load it. The display will then either run through the content on a timed loop or based on a trigger, such as a customer approaching it, or key data on the customer, such as demographics or mood. Some companies, however, are realizing the benefit of delivering truly live content through live streaming, such as Tourism North East, a tourism company based in Victoria, Australia.
The company recently partnered with outdoor advertiser JCDecaux to deliver live-streaming displays in Melbourne City Centre to help attract users to ditch the mundane and hit the slopes for skiing, according to a JCDecaux video.
The displays would livestream representatives from various winter resorts in Australia. When customers approached the display, the representatives would begin talking to them, challenging them to do fun skiing exercises such as a few basic moves and stances, or to just emulate winter activities such as throwing a snowball.
Once users completed the activities, the representatives would tell them they had won life passes for the particular resort and the display would then print off a ticket.
In order to attract users up to the display itself, Tourism North East placed multiple snowmen decorations around the device as well as free marshmallows on sticks. The live streaming also featured many winter themes such as mascots dressed up as marshmallows or husky dogs.
Users in the video were often impressed with the overall interactive experience and were surprised when the display began to directly talk to them.
"So, I saw a booth over here with a camera, so I decided to walk up to it and suddenly the booth started talking to me," a user said in the video.
