Digital signage pulls through for COVID vaccines

COVID-19 has had a heavy toll on businesses, mental health and our general way of life. However, with now three vaccines available and more on the way, people are starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel. Digital signage itself can and already is helping with this fight.

Recently, the Javits Center in New York City became a massive center for vaccine shots. The problem was, how could this center direct visitors on where to go to get their vaccine in a safe and timely manner?

Digital signage stepped up to the plate by delivering key wayfinding information in eight different languages.

However, this isn't the only way digital signage can help in the fight. It can also help address vaccine misinformation and share up-to-date information on who is eligible for vaccines and how they can register. And as we come out the other end of this pandemic, digital signage may continue to play a role in public health.

To learn more about how digital signage is helping with COVID-19 vaccines, Digital Signage Today spoke with Jeff Hastings, CEO of BrightSign, who worked on the Javits Center signage rollout.

Q. How can digital signage help with the vaccine rollout?

A. Digital signage is a dynamic medium that's visually impactful, and it's proving very helpful with the vaccine rollout.

Q. Can you give any specific examples of how digital signage has helped?

A. To see how digital signage is helping the vaccine rollout, look no further than Javits Center in New York City. If you've ever been there, you know it's a massive facility, and it can be tricky to navigate. So, switching it over to serve as a temporary medical facility is a huge undertaking. Further complicating matters is the fact that many people on their way to be vaccinated are not our usual business travelers and have never visited Javits before.

To ease this problem, digital displays have been situated outside to direct car and pedestrian traffic, while screens inside help direct people to the proper location, while also prompting them in eight different languages to have the necessary documentation ready to go, which minimizes processing delays. Thanks to digital signage, vaccine administrators have been able to reduce the amount of time people spend in the facility and maximize the number of people vaccinated each day.

Q. How can digital signage help tackle vaccine misinformation?

A. Fighting misinformation is all about being able to communicate accurate information clearly and consistently. As for how digital signage figures into this effort, digital displays can be used in vaccination distribution centers, doctor offices and even public spaces to share up-to-date information about who's currently eligible, how safe and effective the vaccines are, and explain how everyone doing their part to get vaccinated will help us all return to normal as quickly as possible. Reinforcing these messages via digital signage deployed in high-traffic areas, and in many languages, can play a big role in combatting COVID-related misinformation.

Q.Do you see digital signage playing a role in helping maintain public health post COVID?

A. Absolutely. The pandemic has been a proving ground for how effective digital signage can be in keeping people safe and well-informed. Even after the pandemic runs its course, I think we'll emerge a more health-conscious society where rapidly disseminating important health and safety information is the norm, and digital signage will figure prominently into that effort.
