As digital signage technology continues to evolve at a breakneck pace, the rapid influx of media players supporting the technology continues to grow. Media players can now support 8K content and are pushing the boundaries to 10K possibilities.
It can all seem like a whirlwind for businesses striving to implement the best digital signage that fits its needs.

That's where Daniel Lee comes in.
Lee, the business development manager for IBASE Europe, presented ideas and insight into cutting-edge tech for media players in a webinar, "The tools needed to build the ideal digital signage system," this past Tuesday hosted by Digital Signage Today. IBASE Europe, a professional digital asset management hardware provider, produces the media player SI-654-N, powered by Intel.
IBASE manufactures a full-range of digital signage systems for retail, banking, hospitality, education, transportation, and other industries. Founded in 2000, IBASE houses a factory in Taipei, Taiwan, and has offices in the U.K., U.S., China, Italy, Singapore, and Japan. IBASE began designing digital signage players in 2009, creating the SI-24-S.
In the free one-hour webinar, sponsored by IBASE and available for download, Lee talked about why compact, fanless and cableless media players are ideal for the ever-changing digital signage landscape.
"The SI-654-N is a new player. It has 4HDMI 2.0 outputs and the maximum resolution is to support 4K, therefore the overall resolution the player can support is the equivalent to 8K because you can combine the screens," Lee said. "The SI-654-N is small; it's an industrial grade product designed for 24/7 operation. It is very good for a space-constrained environment."
With its small, fanless design, the media player is equipped to handle warm climates.
"We designed it with a smart fan built into it to cool down the hissing," Lee said. "The fan is controlled by a temperature sensor so it can change the speed according to temperature to keep the noise really low in case someone wants to push it really hard in a hot environment."
Lee said all IBASE players have I-Smart technology, which features four components. Power resume, the first component, shuts down power when the device is not in use, and resumes when the user is ready to use it. The second component is low-temperature guardians, a setting that protects the device in extremely cold temperatures. Third, the I-Smart system carries a power-saving mode and, lastly it features an auto-pilot on/off scheduler to save electricity.
"You can set the player to be on, to be off, up to two times a day," Lee said.
Lee noted several success stories related to the IBASE media player, including an airport that features a 3x12 portrait-mode screen with 72 panels. The display highlights real-time information to keep air travelers informed. An airport in Singapore uses an SI-60-E video wall media player from IBASE.
"The concept is you make a triangular-shaped screen, but you do not put all the screens into it," Lee said. "You can put your content to play all over the place; some of them you will see, some you will not. It makes for a very special shape of screen combinations."
Lee said the retail industry is best suited for large, vibrant video wall marketing. Shoppers get drawn into a store with attractive messaging that can change often.
For instance, Starbucks has embraced video wall technology on a smaller scale. The large coffee chain has had success with digital menu boards that don't cost a lot, but are very versatile.
"Next time you smell the coffee, you can look at the screen," Lee said. "They do this display in the U.K. and parts of Europe. This is a low-cost solution that is really reliable. Our players have a long-life cycle, so they can (display) it for a long period of time."
