5 for 5: January's top digital signage news

We take a look back at the top of the pops from January, recapping the biggest digital signage stories of the month.

February 6, 2015 by Christopher Hall — w, t

Not surprisingly, the biggest news in January was old news — last year's top news to be exact.

A look back at 2014, and looks ahead at 2015, along with some big news from the BIG Show and some big news from the Big Mac of QSRs, are at the top of the charts for January's digital signage news.

So, without further ado, here are the top five stories from January on Digital Signage Today, by pageviews:

5. "Drinking from a digital signage firehose at Retail's BIG Show"

Digital signage and dynamic place-based media expert Lyle Bunn was inundated by the digital flood at this year's National Retail Federation show:

When 35,000 people attended the National Retail Federation retail's BIG Show 2015 in New York City, the busy conference and trade floor were all about "digital." Delegates had a buffet of options to make multichannel happen — along with its imperative omnichannel, the integration of multiple channels to create a customer experience expressed consistently at various touchpoints.

"Bricks are the new Black," declared Bill Simon, former president and CEO of Walmart U.S., in noting that e-commerce is peaking because it lacks the sensory experience of shopping and the immediacy that in-store buying provides, while describing that online mirrors the previous paradigm of catalogue shopping.

"Brick-and-mortar stores are at the emotional and financial center of retail," said Bal Dale of JDA Software, a primary provider of retail application systems.

And Levi Strauss & Co. EVP James Curleigh, president of the Levi's Brand, reflected the thoughts of many delegates in saying, "Stores are at the heart of the shopping journey, impulse buying as well as semiplanned and wish-list purchasing. The key is more productive stores, and technology is the tool that needs to be applied to reinforce the brand and the purchase experience."

4. "Predicting the top 10 digital screen media trends for 2015"

We wrapped up our year-end and year-ahead review with the seventh annual top 10 digital screen media predictions by digital media expert Keith Kelsen:

All screens are part of the continuity of marketing and messages including the increasingly powerful pocket screen. It really comes down to what businesses we are in — on the retail side, on the advertising side, or on the corporate communications side. These are all distinct categories of digital screen media, digital out-of-home and digital signage. This marks my seventh annual Top 10 Trends for the industry — trends that are changing in exciting ways, trends that always include the good, the bad and sometimes the ugly.

Last year my No. 1 trend was "Go big or go small," and I submit to you how going small and big were high on everyone's list from restaurant tables to corporate lobbies to conversion of billboards.

For 2015, I would like to open up a dialog with readers with some thought-provoking predictions in an effort to gauge and better understand readers' reactions. For the first time, you get to tell us what you think the No. 10 trend is.

The main goal of engaging the consumer is to have conversation between the brand and the consumer and ultimately sell something! I submit to to you that everything we do is simple: The brand converses with the consumer and vice versa. So as companies look at what they are really doing in this business, does this realign their goals and thinking?
