PumpTop TV digital signs pulled from Fla. gas stations

May 19, 2011

Gasoline station pump-top digital signs violated a local sign ordinance and had to be removed from at least three gas stations in Lakeland, Fla., according to The Ledger newspaper.

A city official told the paper that "Lakeland codes allow only two categories of business displays: signs fixed on columns or monuments and signs on the walls or windows of buildings." The ordinance has for years been interpreted as forbidding temporary signs above gas pumps, and city code enforcement officials applied the same rule to the PumpTop TV-supplied digital signage displays.

The City Commission is reassessing its decades-old sign ordinance and is considering changes that would allow the displays on gas pumps, the paper said.
