A final public hearing about the proposed rules, which would allow static but not animated billboards, is set for Friday in Helena.

The Montana Transportation Commission might be on the verge of approving proposed rules that would allow outdoor advertisers to erect digital billboards along the state's highways, according to a report the Independent Record.

A final public hearing about the proposed rules, which would allow static but not animated billboards, is set for Friday in Helena.

The commission said it could discuss the proposal and public comments as soon as its May meeting, according to the report.

Montana's state government has been dealing with this issue for the better part of 10 years, according to the report. Electronic billboards today are not allowed along highways and interstates in the state. Some citizens are worried the billboards would take away from Montana's scenic horizon. Other also worry the billboards would distract drivers.
