Clear Channel digital billboards will carry Twin Cities weather warnings

April 25, 2013

Being on the road during severe weather carries extra risks — drivers may be tuned to the radio, may not hear tornado sirens and may drive right into trouble without realizing it.

Thanks to Clear Channel Outdoor, motorists in Minnesota’s Twin Cities now have another method of notification. The company will carry severe weather warnings on 22 Clear Channel digital billboards in Hennepin County, where Minneapolis is the county seat, and nine in neighboring Ramsey County, home to St. Paul.

According to Sun Post, the boards were tested earlier this month in downtown Minneapolis as part of National Severe Weather Preparedness Week. The partners will display only National Weather Service tornado warnings on the signs, according to the report.

Clear Channel Outdoor President Susan Adams Loyd told the newspaper that each sign is seen by an average of 277,000 people per week. The National Weather Service estimated that 9 percent of people killed by tornadoes from 1985 to 2008 were in vehicles.
