Digital signage player provider BrightSign LLC announced that it is demonstrating playback of high dynamic range content on its 4K players as well as Bluetooth and beacon integration at ISE in Amsterdam.
According to BrightSign, HDR is widely regarded as the next major milestone for the display industry after 4K, giving a much higher contrast ratio and much wider color palette complementing the higher resolution of 4K.
"The BrightSign 4K line we shipped almost two years ago supported state-of-the art technology, and now the same players can be updated to support the newest standard in 4K video quality," CEO Jeff Hastings said in the announcement. "The CEA HDR10 standard vastly increases the color gamut to 1,024 shades of each color, enabling the display of colors and contrast that couldn't be reproduced on screen before. Together, the higher resolution of 4K and the increased luminosity and richer colors of HDR will transform the viewing experience.
"HDR will become yet another part of the true 4K ecosystem," he said. "Once again, I believe that adoption in the digital signage industry will be fast, since we have greater control of the whole data chain from content creation to screen."
The company said its 4K players already deliver 10-bit per channel color, so only a firmware update is required to ensure compatibility with emerging HDR screens. HDR support will be available for all BrightSign 4K players with release 6.1 of the player firmware, which will include HDMI 2.0a support. All existing players can be upgraded free of charge once the new firmware is released.
Another in-demand technology feature supported in BrightSign's 6.1 firmware will enable Bluetooth Low Energy and beacon support for digital signage applications.
