Electronics manufacturer AOPEN Inc. has unveiled its AOpen Chromebox Commercial for cloud-based display networks — which the company says "is the first of its kind" — running on the Google Chrome OS to deliver apps for the digital signage, kiosk and POS markets.

AOPEN said the Chromebox Commercial is a commercial-grade device, which sets it apart from previous Chromebox appliances and suits it to power digital displays and vertical applications across a range of industries, from kiosks and public transport systems to high-traffic retail environments. At only 25 mm high, it's designed to fit behind displays and can be integrated into kiosks or POS systems, to be hidden from sight, the company said.

The company said the device is shock and vibration resistant, solid-state and features a wide-operating temperature range up to a maximum of 60° C/140° F (Temperatures above 40° C /104° F require direct power 19 VDC or an optional high heat range adapter). It also has features such as built-in hardware encryption and verified firmware boot designed to help protect against unauthorized breaches of information or updates. This also is designed to broaden the applications of the Chromebox Commercial, so that it can be used in verticals where high volumes of classified data might be collected (e.g., the government or health services sectors), the company said.

AOPEN Global Director of Strategy and Marketing Stephen Borg said the Chromebox has been designed to be ultra-low maintenance. As well as the built-in Chrome hardware security, it has automatic system updates, auto recovery and "Zero Touch Manageability" via the Cloud using Chrome Device Management.

"The Chromebox Commercial is a true feat of engineering; it offers continuous performance even in the most challenging environments," Stephen Borg said. "We've designed it so you can just set it up and let it run. Its fanless, vent-free design means there's no dust building up. You can install it and be confident that the Chromebox is going to continue to power your displays, 24/7."

The Chromebox Commercial also provides RS–RJ commercial ports, including for legacy applications, and has low power consumption to support energy efficiency, which results in lower energy costs for large installments, the company said.

All Commercial Chrome products come with options for either a yearly or a perpetual Chrome Device Management license to allow administrators to manage their organization's Chrome devices from a single place. There is a standard three-year warranty on the device or an optional five-year warranty that can be chosen. The Chromebox Commercial is priced at 429 Euros, and products are available for pre-order now and ready to ship at the end of September, the company said.

Chromebox Commercial technical features include:

  • Intel Quad Core N2930 with 4GB memory;
  • Solid-state drive (fanless/no vents);
  • Dual-screen support;
  • Built-in commercial ports to power POS and other devices;
  • Auto power and auto recovery;
  • Long range Wi-Fi A/B/G/N/AC — 2.4 and 5ghz;
  • Built-in Bluetooth 4.0; and
  • VESA-compatible brackets for optimal system mounting.
