A new, fanless ultrathin media player, the Digital Engine DE3250, was unveiled today by digital signage specialist AOPEN Inc., according to a company announcement. The media player has no ventilation holes, a design feature intended to make it suited for use in rugged, dusty environments or moving vehicles, the company said.

The DE3250, based on Intel N2930 SoC, features high-tech "cooling ribs" which maximizes the use of the available airflow and dissipation of heat, intended to make it suitable for low-noise environments such as hospitals and libraries. The system'sfanless design and its solid-state disk also make it "exceptionally" shockproof, the company said.

OPEN Global Director of Strategy and Marketing Stephen Borg said in the announcement that even though it is thin in size (25 mm/0.98 inches), the DE3250 "is exceptionally robust and powerful."

"Reliability is critical for media players. Whether you're digitizing your menu boards in the restaurant or want to use digital signage in a bus or train, the DE3250 can handle a wide range of environments," he said. "Digital signage in a moving vehicle involves challenges such as fluctuating temperatures, shock and vibration, but the DE3250 overcomes all of these."

The DE3250 is built with the Intel Celeron quad-core Processor N2930, based on a new low-power, high-performance microarchitecture.

"We chose to develop on this platform because of the relationship between quality and price," Borg said. "With the mobile platform we were able to create an ultraslim device for use in different scenarios, such as digital signage, transportation, hospitality and kiosk type applications."

Key DE3250 features include:

  • Dual Display via HDMI x2;
  • Memory support DDR3Lx2 (support for up to 8G);
  • 1333MHz Dual Channel;
  • SIM slot inside;
  • Dual Lan plus Wi-Fi support;
  • COM port;
  • Mounting kit;
  • Minicard expansion slot x2;
  • TV tuner card support;
  • Windows 7/8.1 support;
  • Linux support (Ubuntu 14.04 LTS); and
  • Watchdog timer for device monitoring and control.

The Digital Engine DE3250 fits in the AOPEN Engine Core, which the company said makes it easier to build an extensive signage network or computing array that can be controlled from one location. Its slim design also makes it particularly well suited for installation behind a display or in a kiosk or POS device, AOPEN said.
