Analyst: Pokemon Go proves AR is bigger than VR

GlobalData, a data and analytics company, believes that augmented reality has a greater future ahead of it than virtual reality. The company argues virtual reality has very limited applications whereas augmented reality has many potential uses, such as Pokemon Go, according to a press release.

"AR is the total immersion within a virtual space that can often be sold as a form of escapism. However, the future will not be about escaping reality, but rather augmenting the existing space within the digital world," Josh Hewer, technology analyst at GlobalData, said in the release.

Hewer also emphasized that AR applications like Pokemon Go proved how successful AR can be with more than 650 million downloads. AR, however, can be more than just a game. It can be used for drone operators, proof of concepts for architects, visual displays and more.

"AR could be the game changer for businesses. It is impossible to sell a digital space completely removed from reality of the workplace. AR has a tangible benefit versus the more abstract concept of VR, offering companies a more pragmatic digital solution," Hewer said.
