Providing an enjoyable, and stress-free, flight experience is a constant goal for airlines and that requires effective communication – from providing all travelers timely updates on boarding, baggage, delays and safety.
At Perimeter Aviation, a small regional airline operating scheduled passenger service, cargo as well as charter flights across Manitoba and Ontario, in Canada, that goal is being met by digital signage technology and reflects how the airport and airline are stepping and investing in the passenger experience.
With a network that connects remote northern communities to larger hubs, Perimeter Aviation plays a critical role in accessibility, healthcare travel and community connectivity. The airline manages its own terminal facility in Winnipeg and customer service operations across several bases, 20 remote northern airports and commuter airports in Ontario.
A recent renovation added 22,000 square feet of space with an expanded boarding capacity from one to three gates. Given more passenger traffic, and a bigger facility, the need for clear, real-time communication proved critical.
Several key objectives were mapped out in the summer of 2024:
Perimeter Aviation had never deployed any sort of digital signage technology but discovered digital signage would meet all its objectives. Its external IT partner, after market research with its local vendor, PSB Integration Inc., chose Omnivex and its Omnivex Ink digital signage software platform.
PSB played a key integrator role in the project, which was completed in the spring of 2025, according to Dami Adeola, director of sales at Omnivex. PSB was responsible for bringing together the hardware for the content management system and public address system, as well as on-site project coordination with Perimeter Aviation.
"It was the solution that provided text-to-speech options, visual paging, and visual messaging, all of which support accessibility requirements under the Canadian Accessible Transportation for Persons with Disabilities Regulations and the Accessibility for Manitobans Act," Charity Scantlebury, director, marketing and communications, at Perimeter Aviation, said in an email interview.
"We chose an option to support accessibility, support the addition of multiple gates, enhance our passenger experience to align with expectations of a mainline carrier or airport, and to offer future advertising options for customers," she said.
The digital signage helps to remind passengers about essential information for travel as well as community-minded initiatives.
"We showcase destination and local photography to foster a sense of pride," said Scantlebury.
Omnivex and PSB Integration, an Omnivex partner, deployed a network of over 20 screens across the airline's terminals. The displays are integrated with Atlas IED airport communications system and share a variety of information, including passenger-facing messaging, along with visual paging and messaging, to meet accessibility and transportation requirements.
The digital signage screens are in the lobby, check-in counters, security screening area, boarding lounge, gates and arrivals area.
The screens share a wide range of information including:
The gate information displays, and other signage have helped improve passenger experience and created a sense of pride among employees. Down the road Perimeter Aviation is exploring digital signage expansion to include additional advertising options, as well as sharing sales and discounts and launching contests.
As with any digital signage deployment the airline confronted a few challenges during the project, and some were unexpected.
"As with many projects, this one had some unexpected challenges. There were changes to data sources and timelines that necessitated the team work closely together – with PSB keeping all parties aware of changes to schedules and progress on tasks," said Adeola in an email interview. "The Omnivex and PSB team worked with the client to present the scope change and impact on delivery timeline."
Some challenges were due to legacy processes within the airline's technology infrastructure and terminal operations, such as flights at the terminal being direct bookings and the need to separate data from another division operating flights from the international airport but not Perimeter Aviation's terminal.
"We were originally pulling data from our flight software, but we switched mid-stream to our reservations system to ensure passengers see the same information on their personal device in the flight status tool as they do on the terminal screens. " said Scantlebury.
Most of the issues were resolved through coding and data.
"When we move passengers to a different flight due to a cancellation or delay, we often have to code a flight a certain way," she added." This was showing up on the flight board. A rule was created to address the issue more broadly."
When undertaking a digital signage deployment the strategy should have clearly defined requirements, according to Adeola.
"The Omnivex team and partners are able to work with clients to define these once the project kicks off if needed. Perimeter Aviation was great in that the vision was clear (they knew what they wanted to be shown and how it should look), but they were also honest about where our assistance would be helpful (how it should work and be programmed, including best practices for ongoing management), which really helped ensure the success of a project."
Another key success factor, according to Scantlebury, was attaining stakeholder involvement.
"Ensure all appropriate stakeholders are involved to align expectations, provide the information you need in a timely way, and support the overall management of the system," she said. "I think this is something that we did fairly well with only a few road bumps."
"This project highlights how the requirements of smaller airports are the same as larger facilities, but with less footprint and fewer resources. Omnivex leverages our experience with larger clients (integrations, digital signage use cases, regulatory requirements) and packages it in a way that makes sense for customers like Perimeter Aviation," said Adeola.
Omnivex digital signage software enables organizations to collect, present, and share information in real-time, on any screen.
