The latest digital transformation at Citi Field, home stadium for the New York Mets, is a refresh of the iconic Coca-Cola sign, which overlooks right field. The project, completed in late summer, represents the latest achievement in the four-year partnership between the Mets and Samsung Electronics America.

The LED signage sits above Coca-Cola Corner, a 9,000-square-foot fan area atop the right-field seating deck. The space features full concessions, bar setups, interactive games and panoramic views of the field and scoreboard.

The Coca-Cola sign features 22,117 pixels capable of reaching 3,000 nits of brightness. Samsung repainted the structure and outline of the sign and worked with Coca-Cola to match its exact shade of iconic red.

The IP66-rated display is dust-tight, protected against heavy rain and built to remain clearly visible in any weather or lighting conditions. The latest updates also allow for easier servicing, keeping the sign game-day ready. Live event and video production company Ross Video is producing new digital content for the sign, which the Mets can manage directly from its Samsung-powered 4K control room.

How it all came about

The digital transformation taking place at Citi Field is all about creating an engaging and immersive stadium which delivers a one-of-a-kind fan experience. Given the baseball season schedule the transformation has been mapped in a multi-year approach in order not to disrupt team operations and game play.

The Mets' partnership with Samsung, which began several years ago, has also brought ribbon boards, concession displays and screens in suites to the stadium. A standout addition was the installation of the largest scoreboard in professional baseball and the first 4K control room in Major League Baseball.

The digital upgrades are opening new revenue channels, having turned static displays into dynamic canvases for advertisements visible both inside and outside the stadium. This includes the rear of the main scoreboard, which is visible from the highway.

The team also uses the digital boards as a coaching tool. During batting practice, they'll put a live feed on the right-field scoreboard and a delayed feed on the centerfield scoreboard. The displays highlight key metrics, such as pitch speed and hip distance. After a session in the cage, players can look up and review their performance.

The Coca-Cola sign transformation

The Coca-Cola display refresh began on July 7, 2025, and was completed by Aug. 2, 2025.

"It was a rapid, four-week turnaround that required close collaboration between the installation team, the Mets organization and venue operations to ensure minimal disruption to stadium activities," David Phelps, head of the display division, Samsung Electronics America, said in an email interview.

The upgraded Coca-Cola sign technology is consistent with the more than 1,300 displays already installed in the stadium.

"This refresh allows the Mets to control the Coca-Cola sign like the other outfield displays from a Samsung-powered 4K control room, creating a more seamless and integrated experience from their point of view," Phelps said.

Last year, the Mets unveiled a 3D anamorphic, two-sided LED display in the stadium's concourse, providing fans with dynamic content ranging from scoreboard updates to player stats and partner advertisements. In 2023, the Mets debuted the 17,400-square-foot scoreboard.

"The stadium also features a smaller scoreboard along the second baseline and numerous other displays, including digital signage in team stores, concession stands and throughout the concourse," said Phelps.

The Samsung partnership demonstrates just one of the many significant investments from the Mets ownership, according to Oscar Fernandez, head of technology at the New York Mets.

"Together with Samsung, we have continued to transform and enhance the fan experience at Citi Field by delivering cutting-edge technology throughout the ballpark. The quality of these upgrades integrated into the daily experience for our fans make Citi Field an industry leader when it comes to the most innovative digital displays. These upgrades are how together, with Samsung, we're setting new standards for our fans' expectations," Fernandez said in an email interview.

The decision to upgrade the Coca-Cola sign was prompted partially by the end of life for current displays.

"It was an important upgrade for us as we knew the impact it would have on enhancing the fan experience in the ballpark. As new technology emerges, it's an opportunity for us to take our displays to the next level and make sure our fans are fully immersed in the experience at Citi Field," said Fernandez.

The top challenge in the Coca-Cola sign refresh, according to Phelps, was making sure the sign retained Coca-Cola's instantly recognizable red color.

"Over decades of exposure to weather and the elements, the original hue had become faded. To restore the sign in its full glory, Samsung first repainted the frame and outline of the structure. Then, in close collaboration with Coca-Cola, the team worked to match the exact shade of the brand's iconic red," said Phelps.

This required careful testing and multiple iterations to guarantee the sign would appear authentic both in daylight and when illuminated at night.

"Through this detailed process, the team was able to preserve the sign's heritage while giving it a modern refresh," said Phelps.

Enhancing the guest experience

The digital transformation at Citi Field is all about creating a memorable guest experience.

"Display technology is a critical element for the fan experience at Citi Field. It allows fans to capture every moment of action, while also making the game memorable as fans can take in every moment at Citi Field on the biggest scoreboard in MLB," said Fernandez, adding, "energy is such an important part of the fan experience – enhancements like this help to amplify that energy and create an electric atmosphere that makes Citi Field leave a lasting impression on all in attendance."

The success of Citi Field's digital transformation is all about keeping that guest experience at the forefront.

"In our experience of upgrading display technology at Citi Field, we focused on keeping the fan experience as our top priority. In that we looked at what other ballparks and venues have done, while also trusting in a top of line partner with Samsung," said Fernandez.

Samsung's ability to push the envelope and look to the future allows ballparks to elevate their display technology by bringing opportunities that have never been done before, he added.

"This also helps to open up other opportunities as well — for example, our brand partners can take advantage of our new technology displays — which allow us to explore new avenues of revenue."
