Print brand Outside Magazine expands into digital out-of-home video

December 20, 2009

MediaPost reported last week that Outside Magazine, which is published by Mariah Media, has announced a partnership with the Resort Sports Network (RSN) to create a new network designed to reach resort guests. RSN will be rebranded as The Outside Television Network and will launch June 1, 2010.

The Outside Television Network will be placed in guest rooms and public areas at participating resorts and will feature Outside Magazine editoral content, such as Best Towns, Best Jobs, Trips of the Year, Best Gear, Outside Buyer's Guide and lifestyle advice on health, fitness, and nutrition. Outside also will produce feature stories on topics that lend themselves to the video medium.

RSN currently reaches 61 million viewers a year at 110 resorts. Based on Nielsen research from Outside Magazine, RSN boasts desirable viewer demographics, as resort-goers tend to be more affluent and more prone to spend than the general population.

The partnership reflects a trend among print magazines that are making a move to digital out-of-home. In 2008 Condé Nast's Bon Appetit partnered with Premier Retail Networks to distribute content via PRN's Checkout TV network. The short-form, custom content includes cooking tips, party idea and tie-ins with "The Next Food Network Star."
