Flat panel display market falls by 11%

April 23, 2020

Global shipments of flat panel displays are expected to decrease by 11.1% in 2020 due to the coronavirus hurting the market, according to a report by Omdia.

Total shipments this year are expected to total 3.2 billion, down from 3.6 billon in 2019.

"The coronavirus is spreading throughout the world at a faster pace than expected," Ricky Park, director of display research at Omdia, said in the report. "The pandemic is starting to directly impact application market demand as stores close and lockdowns become widespread, weakening consumer accessibility. In particular, TVs and smartphones — products that rely heavily on retail consumer demand — will find it difficult to avoid the direct impact of coronavirus and will be hit more severely than other areas by the contagion. This will result in a sharp decline global flat-panel display demand in 2020."

However, Omdia did predict that the market will recover by 9.2% in 2021, according to the report.
