AV and digital signage industry veteran Sam Taylor has launched Swim With Purpose, a swim charity aiming to benefit students at Kentucky State University, an HBCU based in Frankfort, Kentucky, according to a press release.

Taylor, a swim coach and avid swimmer, currently serves as EVP and COO at Exertis Almo, where he is slated to retire this June.

Swim With Purpose is a nonprofit organization aiming to raise funds to help re-establish indoor swimming at the Kentucky State University William Exum Center and to support maintenance and community-focused programs, including efforts in partnership with the local YMCA to create classes and break generational barriers to swimming in the community.

Board members include:

  • Katrisha Waldridge serves as Frankfort City Commissioner and has served four years as Mayor ProTem, the first African American woman ever elected to these positions in the city. Waldridge is also a mother of two and an alumna of Kentucky State University.
  • Jamaal Jackson serves as head basketball coach and deputy athletic director at KYSU along with serving on a variety of nonprofits serving the central Kentucky region.
  • Berry L. Popp serves as VP and commercial lender for Whitaker Bank and also serves on the Frankfort Chamber of Commerce, Frankfort Kiwanis Club and the Development Interest Group of Frankfort.
  • Nick Belcore serves as EVP at Peerless-AV, a digital signage firm.

The charity held a kick-off event on April 19 at the KSU Cooperative Extension building.

"Because I am retiring in June, I will be able to spend more time engaging in my lifelong passion for swimming," Taylor said in the release. "While swimming at KSU as a member of the YMCA, I was aware that the pool at Kentucky State University had been out of operation for nearly two years. These fundraising efforts will allow us to make the necessary repairs to get the pool back in working condition."

"KSU is a public, historically black land-grant university. Unfortunately, statistics show that minorities are 50 percent more likely to drown because of their limited access to pools and swim lessons. Once the pool is ready, the next goal is to start a swim program for college students. Additionally, we are working with the local YMCA on providing swim lessons for those children who wouldn't otherwise have access to this life-saving skill."
