Digital Signage Expo to host display calibration course

December 20, 2009

To address the growing need for a more thorough understanding of displays and how to calibrate them in an expanding array of digital signage system applications, The Digital Signage Experts Group has announced the launch of the Digital Signage Display Experts (DSDE) program. The new program is being presented and led by Alan and Jonathan Brawn, with the cooperation of several display companies and Digital Signage Expo.

The newly created Digital Signage Display Experts (DSDE) program addresses the displays as a key component in a system and teaches how to properly calibrate them.
Digital signage is one of the fastest-growing segments of the commercial A/V industry. But one of the problems with this market is that digital signage appears quite simple on the surface, but becomes a tangled web of interconnected and complex technologies that all act together in unison to produce the image seen on screen.

"Many companies have parts of the technology they understand, but few understand the whole picture of what digital signage requires," said Alan Brawn, principal, Brawn Consulting. "To truly succeed in this space, a company must understand all of the disparate parts that make up the entirety of a digital signage network, and understand how to properly sell the value in those networks to the customer."

Video displays require calibration once delivered from the manufacturer in order to work to their full potential. Proper calibration goes beyond simply adjusting some settings on a display. Each display type has its own personality and responds to inputs and environments in different ways. Understanding the nuances of each technology and how to address them to provide the perfect picture is a requirement. The bottom line is that one size does not fit all.

The mandate of the DSDE program is to understand each display technology and the key elements that can be adjusted/calibrated in concert with one another relative to the environment in which the displays exist. By adopting calibration standards and understanding the methodologies involved in the calibration process the industry can address an infinite number of applications and environments and never have the need to settle for the mediocre or inaccurate.

"By certifying that standards and proven methodologies are understood and employed, we will bring forth a group of digital signage display experts dedicated to creating the perfect picture and in the process pay homage to the creators of the digital signage content and displaying it as it was intended," Alan Brawn said.

The Digital Signage Display Expert (DSDE) Program will be launched at the Digital Signage Expo, to be held Feb. 23-25 at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas and will be available in select locations nationwide throughout 2010, as well as an online version. Registration is still open for the inaugural training session to take place at the Digital Signage Expo in Las Vegas, Feb. 23, 2010.
