How companies are leveraging outdoor kiosks to improve user experience

This is the third blog in Meridian's newest series on outdoor kiosks.

Outdoor kiosks can offer users an enhanced experience by streamlining processes that might otherwise require long wait times or inefficient searching. There are countless use cases that can be accomplished with an outdoor kiosk to increase ROI. We've outlined a few key examples and the components needed to create the best user experience.

Ticketing

Ticketing kiosks provide customers the option to purchase tickets instantly. The self-service ticketing solution acts as a customer-facing point of sale, allowing businesses to reallocate labor to more complex service oriented tasks. Components should include a ticket printer, optical scanner, EMV compliant chip reader and pin pad.

Wayfinding

Wayfinding solutions can be used in airports, hotels or city centers to help visitors navigate to their destination. Users can use wayfinding kiosks to book transportation, make hotel accommodations and learn more about local restaurants and events.

Secure check-in

Self-service check-in solutions give guests the opportunity to check in for meetings and events at their convenience. Check-in kiosks can scan IDs, capture photos, print badges for visitors and more. Components for these solutions typically include a camera, badge/label printer and biometrics devices such as a retina scanners, palm-vein readers, etc.

Parking management

Parking management kiosks improve user experience by tracking occupied and unoccupied spaces and offering drivers a simple solution to find their cars. Components will usually include thermal printers, unattended payment devices and web cameras of varying types.

Digital signage

Outdoor digital signage provides numerous advantages for businesses and organizations looking to reach their audience. Digital signage is more accessible and interactive than traditional static signage, offering users a more engaging experience. Components for such a deployment could include a VoIP phone for calling a listing business, a printer and web camera.

Vending and dispensing

Vending and dispensing kiosks provide a secure and cost-effective solution that acts as an unattended storefront and provides customers a fully automated sales experience. Components may include card dispensers, unattended payment devices, thermal printers and optical 1D/2D scanners.

Informational

Informational kiosks can be leveraged by museums, schools and other organizations to educate visitors. The solution improves user experience by offering visitors a chance to browse and search information at their convenience.

Bill pay

Bill-pay kiosks enable consumers to independently complete electronic payment transactions using a secure, reliable platform. Components could include EMV2- and PCI-compliant chip reader and pin pad, note acceptors and dispensers, note recyclers, coin acceptors and/or dispensers, coin recyclers and check acceptor and/or scanner.

While the examples above represent a range of outdoor use cases, we've also encountered a number of unique solutions that need entirely custom components. For example, the Opus Inspection auto-emissions testing kiosks require both a reliable outdoor build and highly advanced testing technology to properly perform the auto-emissions test outside. 

Regardless of use case, it's important to remember that the ultimate goal is to offer a reliable device that enhances user experience, leading to higher engagement and increased ROI.
