Digital signage and QR codes collide

April 14, 2011 by Steve Acquista — Director of Digital Signage, Black Box

If you want to invoke a reaction from your ordinary passive digital sign, try incorporating a QR Code in the layout and see what happens. The days of casually viewing digital advertising layouts may be a thing of the past with the advent of Quick Response codes and smartphones.

Having worked in this industry for as long as I have, it usually takes a quantum leap in technology to get me excited these days. Like it did when the first Motorola mobile brick phone or Pioneer plasma display came out, I had to be the first to test it. Today it's a smart phone, a QR app, and a digital signage layout with an embedded QR code that has me saying, "You want cutting edge interaction and measurable analytics with your digital signage solution? It may be a QR code away."

So next time you're visiting your favorite store, look around for the signs with QR Codes and whip out your smartphone. You just might be the next winner of a cool prize, the recipient of a discount coupon or at the very least, more informed about what's on the screen.
