Projection tech is nothing new in digital signage — or sports for that matter — but it's still something that's relatively novel and rare when it's used in a high-profile setting and done superlatively well — as it was this past weekend by the NHL's Chicago Blackhawks.
The Blackhawks wowed spectators with a projection mapping on-ice show before the puck dropped on the team's home opener in Chicago:
And the sports blogosphere has taken notice, with mentions on websites ranging from the Sporting News to bleacher report.
"It's so good it almost makes you forget there's a game afterwards," the Sporting News' Jasmine Watkins wrote.
"If this is the future of pregame introduction videos, sports fans will be getting their money's worth before games even start," Kyle Newport wrote on bleacher report.
Several commenters also pointed out the display put on to open last year's Stanley Cup Playoffs by the Montreal Canadiens, which was indeed impressive:
The Chicago show even provoked some unfortunate punning from the twitterati:
@Jen_Wall23 NICE! Those projection videos are so awesome! Or would some say...HAWKsome? ...eh not my best @NHLBlackhawks

Well, in her defense, it was pretty hawksome.
