In just a few days, we will enter the final year of the 2010s. To celebrate the start of 2019, we will look back at the top stories of 2018, starting with the most-read news stories. (Parts 2 and 3 of this series will include the year's most popular blogs and feature stories.)
Some of the news items were actually older content that continually brings in visitors, such as a story from 2016 on an Amazon Fire TV app that can transform any TV into digital signage. Other top stories covered breaking news, such as last month when a U.K. team discovered fecal and "gut" bacteria on several McDonald's kiosk touchscreens.
DOOH and software trends also came out on top in 2018, as multiple news stories covered the growth of the DOOH industry.

6. Mood Media hits 50,000 visual player milestone
Mood Media, an in-store media solutions company, now has 50,000 visual displays deployed worldwide. The company's main solution, Mood TV, provides short family friendly video content along with promotions and information, according to a press release.
5. McDonald's kiosk touchscreens found with fecal bacteria
Stories are spreading like viruses across the news media concerning the findings of an experiment conducted by a British newspaper, The Metro, on kiosk screens found in eight London-area McDonald's stores. Scientists analyzed samples taken from swipes of the kiosk touchscreens.
4. McDonald's USA making its digital menu board play
AT&T announced it has collaborated with digital signage solution provider Stratacache and digital signage display provider LG Electronics to provide a completely integrated digital menu board solution for McDonald's USA's business.

The global DOOH market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 12.6 percent from 2017 to 2023, according to a report by Allied Market Research. It also predicts the market will reach more than $8 billion by 2023.
The billboard segment held the highest market share in 2016, and will continue to grow by 12.8 percent from 2017 to 2023.

Upshow is launching a free cloud-based, plug-and-play digital signage solution that works with an Amazon Fire TV Stick or Fire TV Box to transforms TVs into digital signage, according to a company press release.
