San Diego Planned Parenthood rolls out digital signage network

Twenty-one California locations will get healthcare networks after successful research, pilot program.

August 12, 2009

Planned Parenthood has announced the rollout of a digital signage network to its San Diego and Riverside Counties (Calif.) locations. The rollout was based on research that showed its patients were open to new outreach channels such as social media and content marketing.

Ovation Interactive was the digital signage supplier for the project, and installed 42-inch HD LCD screens from LG Electronics and digital media players manufactured by Corn Digital in each location. Content includes spots focused on sexual health issues, popular music video, and news about local community events.

Planned Parenthood San Diego and Riverside Counties (PPSDRC), with three Ovation systems in place already, is in the process of installing twenty-one additional systems to complete a signage network for their service territory.

The rollout is the result of a successful pilot test held earlier this year, where PPSDRC tested the effectiveness of patient-directed messaging with digital signage in three of their area clinics.

Here is a sample piece of content from the PPSDRC network:

PPSDRC says that collective feedback from patients and visitors, staff, and administrators has been very positive, leading to a full scale roll-out for the group.

"Ovation Interactive's digital signage technology has turned our waiting rooms into education centers, proving patients with entertaining and enlightening information about sexual health and safety," said Rebecca Karpinski, vice president of Strategy Management, PPSDRC.

Research for the network was very positive. According to studies performed during the pilot tests:
• 85 percent of respondents to a patient exit survey said they learned something new (from the digital signage content) • At least 40 percent of respondents indicated the content would influence their views on relationships and choices. • 43 percent said they'd like to learn more (in the waiting room) about causes and symptoms of sexually transmitted diseases. • Over 400,000 persons pass through PPSDRC's waiting rooms each year.
