Disney World projection tech turns Epcot into Monsters U (Video)

Monsters University scare student Mike Wazowski invades Disney World with the help of digital signage.

Walt Disney Resort in Florida recently used projection tech to turn the park's iconic Epcot Spaceship Earth sphere into a giant Mike Wazowski, the short cyclopian monster from Pixar's Monsters Inc. and Monsters University.

The projection project promoted the park's recent "Monstrous Summer" kickoff, in which Disney's three parks in Florida and California stayed open 24 hours for a Monsters U. all-nighter, as well as the upcoming "Monsters University" movie.

"What we're doing here tonight is we're projecting and transforming Spaceship Earth into scare student Mike Wazowski from Monsters University bigger than ever before," said Michael Roddy, senior show writer and show director for Walt Disney Creative Entertainment.

ShowTec Inc., which provides full-service production and design for corporate and special events worldwide, accomplished the job by using eight 35K projectors stacked to correct for projecting the 188-foot-tall Monster Mike onto the orb's rounded surface.
