Insight on choosing the best display technology, a new operating system for digital signage and a new visualization center opportunity are just three of dozens of interesting happenings during the first day of InfoComm 2016 taking place this week at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Here is a peek at five newsworthy notes from the conference floor on opening day:

  1. Richard McPherson and Benjamin Hardy from NEC Display Solutions of America hosted an informative education session on "How to Determine the Right Display Technology." Here's one tidbit from the session: It's critical for digital signage providers to help customers define what is wanted in order to decide what solution is needed. Providers must also assist customers in answering the question, "what's gained from adding a particular technology and what aspects of it should be considered before installation?"

  2. A consortium featuring digital signage industry stalwarts Intel, LG Electronics U.S.A. Inc and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., among others, has developed the Tizen open source operating system for connected devices. Beginning this year, Samsung's new P Series digital signage technologies will feature the enhanced fourth-generation Samsung SMART Signage Platform, SSSP 4.0, powered by the new operating system. Tizen aims to enable users to manage display content more rapidly through an optional PC-less, all-in-one screen.

  3. OLEDs are all over the convention. LG has orders in for its new dual-view flat OLED display and it hasn't even started shipping. The 55-inch hanging displays are as thin as a pencil and feature ultra HD resolution, high-performance SoC and internal memory capacity that provides UHD-synced playback without a PC or media player.

  4. Samsung showcased its IP-rated OHF Series LCD screens. Three displays were showered with water, struck by a hammer and set up on a vibrating display case, respectively, to show how they can be placed in harsh outdoor environments without an additional enclosure.

  5. NanoLumens is opening its third visualization center, right here in Sin City, to showcase its technological offerings. The venue enables the company to bring in its resellers, vendors and clients to see technology in play and show it off in real-world applications.
