Touch sensor provider Zytronic has announced that its touch sensors and controllers will be included in Transcity Sports' large-format touch tables. The deal was reached through Zytronic's Australian distribution partner, JEA Technologies.
According to a news release, the tables have a 42-inch display with 1920-by-1080 pixel resolution, and through a multitouch graphical user interface, allow viewers to watch live sporting events on TV or view Web pages. With multiple screen configurations, one, two or four different TV signals or websites can be accessed simultaneously, the release said. Several of the tables have been installed in Australia, and more are planned soon.
According to Zytronic, its proprietary Projected Capacitive Technology is based on an X-Y grid of micro-fine copper capacitors embedded within a laminated substrate. The matrix can detect multiple finger touches through the screen's thick glass protective overlay, which helps the sensor resist of mechanical stress, including impacts and scratches, as well as extreme temperatures, dirt and other forms of harm or interference, the company said.
As a result, Zytronic added, the devices are not prone to sensor drift over time and don’t require re-calibration or a bezel around the sensor's perimeter, which allows for sleek smooth-fronted designs. And the controller firmware includes palm rejection algorithms that let users lean on the surface without affecting touch performance.
"The Sports Vision Table offers users access to digital TV, as well as Internet browsing, via its intuitive, state-of-the-art touchscreen," Transcity Managing Director Geoff McDowell said in the release. "Zytronic's PCT was the only multi-touch technology capable of giving us the bezel-free aesthetic we required, whilst still being strong enough to cope with a sports bar environment. Its sensors were comfortably able to achieve the Z-axis performance needed to get through the table's six millimeter thick toughened glass surface. The touchscreen solutions we looked at from other suppliers simply proved to be inadequate."
Touch-enabled interaction is becoming increasingly common in the leisure and entertainment industries, according to Ian Crosby, Zytronic's sales and marketing director. "Our PCT sensors' inherent durability means they will easily cope with the numerous hazards found in a sports bar environment," he said in the release, "so that potential damage via scratches from jewelry or watches, heavy impacts and liquid spillages are all fully protected against."
