Effective internal and visitor communication is a constant challenge for University Hospitals Birmingham which runs two hospitals: the Queen Elizabeth and Selly Oak, located 1.5 miles apart in south Birmingham.
On a typical day more than 10,000 staff, patients and visitors will be in the hospitals at some time. Trust notice boards can be full of out-of-date content and awash with "unauthorized" material, failing to reflect the dynamic communication aspirations of the hospitals.
"The screensaver means we can use our existing PC network infrastructure to reach all staff including consultants, nurses and allied workers who work various shifts, 24 hours a day, seven days a week in areas where access and the ability to absorb communication may be difficult," said Stephen Chilton, deputy director of ICT, University Hospitals Birmingham.
The Connectivison messaging software allows UHB to improve and enhance their communications to reach all of its staff, patients and visitors quickly, easily and efficiently using the "real time" push Connectvision communications channel, called 'Invision' by UHB. Moreover, it provides timely guaranteed message accuracy and consistency that is authorised, scheduled and targeted for different audiences, at different times in specific locations.
Connectvision screensaver and multimedia communications will be used to supplement UHB's internal and visitor communications. A number of InVision communication campaigns are planned. Infection control is a high priority for UHB and will feature regularly in InVision's schedules reminding staff, patients, and especially visitors, to wash their hands and reduce one of the biggest causes of infection. Other campaigns will include energy saving messages, hospital news and health and safety alerts. The large 42-inch LCD screens will feature team briefing news, hospital news, restaurant menus, health and safety alerts, staff training and workshop course bulletins, local transport and weather information, national news feeds, and security alerts for example.
"This was a challenging and important communications project given the many audiences at UHB and their information requirements," said Chris Welsh, managing director, Saturn Communications Group Ltd. "Connectvision screensaver and multimedia messaging is designed for just this kind of environment, enabling UHB to cut through the 'noise' of a busy workplace to give people the messages that matter."
