OpenAI is working on an autonomous AI agent that can control computers on its own, with a limited release planned for 2025, according to The Verge.
The project's code name is "Operator," according to The Verge's report, coming in the context of similar product announcements from OpenAI competitors like Anthropic and Google.
OpenAI's tool is currently slated to be available as a research preview and development tool in January, according to the report.
"I think 2025 is going to be the year that agentic systems finally hit the mainstream," Kevin Weil, chief product officer at OpenAI, said in a statement at an OpenAI press event quoted by the report.
