Microsoft unveiled Silverlight, its new browser plug-in for playing media files and accessing interactive applications, at the National Association of Broadcasters show on Monday, CNET reported. The software, which is being touted as an alternative to Flash, will be released in beta later this month.
Adobe also unveiled a new player application at NAB, the Adobe Media Player. Mac News Network reports that it is built around existing Flash architecture, and contains new tools for distributing and tracking media assets. The cross-platform player is based on open standards such as RSS and SMIL.
