Matsushita, Pioneer to merge plasma-panel units
April 21, 2008
HONG KONG — Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., maker of the Panasonic electronics brand, and Pioneer Corp. will merge their plasma-panel businesses next year, folding research and production into a single unit, according to a media report Tuesday.
The merger, due to be announced later this week, will see Pioneer stop producing plasma panels by next year and source Matsushita-supplied panels for televisions 42 inches and larger, a Nikkei newspaper reported Tuesday without identifying its source.
Pioneer, the No. 3 producer in the domestic market, will continue to develop image-producing circuits for use in its TVs while outsourcing development and production of other parts of its plasma-screen needs to Matsushita, the market leader in domestic plasma-TV sales, the report said.
Matsushita will incorporate Pioneer technology into its own high-definition panels, the report said.
