LevelVision, formerly IntelliMat, announced it has received its tenth U.S. patent. "Interactive and dynamic electronic floor advertising/messaging display" received patent no. 7,205,903 on April 17, 2007.
"Embodiments of the present invention relate to a floor display system comprising a floor covering and an electronic display device associated with the floor covering. The electronic display device is able to display electronically modifiable arbitrary content. The floor display system further comprises a controller and a sensing device coupled to the controller. The sensing device is associated with a specific location on the display device and generates a signal to the controller to cause a content of a display of the display device to be modified or newly generated at the specific location." (Excerpted from the patent, the full text of which is available here.)
The patent doesn't hone in on specific display technology to be used in the floor-level devices, but instead leaves the doors wide open for everything from LCDs and plasmas to nanocarbon displays, electronic paper and "light-emitting ceramic or other light-emitting inorganic materials."
In a press release, LevelVision said its patent portfolio provides the company "with the right to exclude competitors from selling, marketing or manufacturing electronic display technologies that fall within the scope of the claims of its patents, including electric display technologies on the floor and any level surface."
