InfoComm12: Sony expands digital signage lineup

June 13, 2012

At this year's InfoComm in Las Vegas, Sony is highlighting its expanded line of public displays, offered in an array of new sizes, with flexible features and I/Os for video, audio and control.

The newest additions include five new models: the 55-inch FWD-S55H2, as well as the 32-inch FWD-32B1, 42-inch FWD-42B2, 46-inch FWD-46B2 and 55-inch FWD-55B2. The new models are designed to deliver bright digital signage content for a range of indoor and outdoor environments, including shopping malls, hotels and airports. They are also aimed at corporate and education presentation applications.

The FWD-S55H2 model is fitted with direct LED backlighting, which helps to produce an extremely bright 55-inch image at 1000cd/m2, and very uniform images in all environments, including large venues and places with bright ambient lighting, the company said. The FWD-S55H2 display also includes an option slot for additional interfaces such as HD-SDI. A DICOM gamma mode is also available for medical reference use, offering the ability to show accurate X-Rays on the display's full color screen.

The new Sony public displays are designed to be energy efficient, offering low power consumption through LED backlighting, which is approximately 35 percent less than a conventional CCFL, or Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp, model. In addition to dramatically reducing running costs, the displays' energy-saving design also enables them to emit less CO2 during use.

Each display can be controlled via included RS-232C or RJ45 interfaces with network display management tools, which can monitor the display status and control multiple displays over LAN, VPN or the Internet. All new displays include a wide range of video interfaces for installation flexibility, including HDMI, DVI, HD15 for RGB or Component, BNC for composite video and 3-pin for component video.

Users have the option to install the displays in landscape or portrait mode, and each model has a slim installation design, with a bezel thickness of only 16.1mm on the B-series displays. The depth of the LED-based models is also less than half of a traditional LCD display. The signal in and out terminals are incorporated into the display's profile to avoid protruding from the unit.

Sony public display products are tested by the same team that qualifies Sony's 4K SXRD projectors and high-end production monitors, to help ensure extremely high picture quality. All are designed and warranted for 24/7 operation in either portrait or landscape orientation for three years.
