Fight for the Future, a digital rights activist organization, has launched its BanFacialRecognition.com website, which calls for a Federal ban on government use of facial recognition surveillance. The site allows users to contact their local, state and federal lawmakers to ask them to ban the technology, according to a press release.
"Silicon Valley lobbyists are disingenuously calling for light 'regulation' of facial recognition so they can continue to profit by rapidly spreading this surveillance dragnet. They're trying to avoid the real debate: whether technology this dangerous should even exist. Industry and government friendly oversight will not fix the dangers inherent in law enforcement use of facial recognition: we need an all out ban," the site states.
Fight for the Future also argues that facial recognition surveillance will quickly become the "hallmark of authoritarian states."
The city of San Francisco recently banned facial recognition for government use.
