Digital signage goes in for radiation treatment

July 30, 2014

Tempe, Ariz.-based digital signage provider NORVISION has deployed its "Skylite" in-ceiling video walll in the radiation treatment rooms at Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center in Gilbert, Ariz., according to a companyannouncement. The recessed ceiling screens project calming imagery and serene videos to patients receiving radiation therapy.

"This is the first time this has been done in radiation therapy rooms," NORVISION Vice President Don May said in the announcement. "The system helps patients endure the often tedious and stressful radiation treatments. It's a beautiful system. The screens are recessed into the ceiling, giving it a natural skylight look and feel."

Installing the screens challenged NORVISION's engineering team, since standard electronics and LCD screens fail in the radiation-rich environment, the company said. The solution was to recess and protect building-block style MicroTiles, manufactured by display company Christie Digital. NORVISION developed a tablet app to manage the content.

On entering the radiation therapy room, patients can select scenes from a digital media library. Once the treatment begins, hospital technicians start the content loop via a wireless tablet. Content is automatically updated by adding media to cloud-based storage systems such as Dropbox or Google Drive.
