A more-than-50-foot-long LED digital signage screen on the banks of the River Clyde in Glasgow, Scotland, brought added excitement to theGlasgow Commonwealth Games 2014, according to an announcement from screen provider Wavetec. The display was arrayed outside the Glasgow Science Centre in collaboration with BBC Scotland.

According to the announcement, shop concept firm ITAB Group, in a strategic partnership with Wavetec, won the tender to supply, install and support a large external LED display screen at GSC for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, a multisport event that attracted about 5,000 athletes from 71 different nations and territories competing in 18 different sports. This year, the 2014 Commonwealth Games (officially the XX Commonwealth Games) were held in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 3.

Customer experience management and information display solutions provider Wavetec manufactured a LED screen with a total cover area of 55 square meters (15.3 meter wide by 3.6 meters tall) with a high resolution achieved with an 8 millimeter pitch. Also, the SMD technology of the LEDs allowed for a wide viewing angle without compromising on the brightness of the videos and images, the company said, and the content of the screen was managed by Wavetec's Web-based CMS and Canvas Designer.

Even after hosting the opening ceremony of Commonwealth Games around the facility, organizers wanted to be able to display live videos at the Glasgow Science Centre's main entrance. The central idea was to develop an effective and captivating visual impact engaging the audience visiting the site, the company said.

The high-resolution LED display was placed in the front-facing "features wall" located at the Glasgow Science Centre where it played a prominent role both before and during the Commonwealth Games as it provided a range of cultural and informative programs and videos about the event. The screen is flanked by two iconic buildings and will remain as part of the games legacy providing signage and interactive educational content for the Glasgow Science Centre.

The "Big Screen" Video Wall is being used for live coverage of events and shows, and in the past weeks the screen played a key role attracting visitors to the Commonwealth Games 2014 where viewers were able to experience the buzz of the all competitions at the outdoor deck, Wavetec said.

The screen also became a center of attraction in the cultural festival showcasing the best of Glasgow and Scotland's arts and culture alongside that of the Commonwealth. The Big Screen broadcasted the opening and closing ceremony, live news, competitions and live-streaming content from BBC. The opening ceremony launch was attended by around 3,500 members of the public, all gathered around the giant LED screen.
