In part of ongoing efforts to increase connectivity in emerging markets, Veon — a global connectivity and technology firm — has announced that its subsidiary Beeline has launched 4G coverage for the metro system in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, according to a press release.
"Our customers can now access messages, call friends and family, listen to music and podcasts and even watch their favorite TV shows in high resolution at all stations of the Tashkent metro," Andrzej Malinowski, CEO at Beeline Uzbekistan, said in the release. "Through this investment we are building the technology infrastructure of Uzbekistan and the status of Tashkent as an IT hub for the Central Asian region, while also advancing the city and country as a major tourist destination."
The rollout is part of a larger "4G for all" campaign by Beeline in Uzbekistan, which in 2022 involved launching 2300 4G base stations across the nation and extending Beeline's 4G coverage by 16%.
The partnership includes 4G coverage in 31 stations of the 4-line subway system. With 220 million rides in 2022, the implications for networking, communication, DOOH and more are extensive.
"While cities like London and New York are still struggling to provide mobile connectivity across their underground and subway stations, we are proud to be delivering digital communication and services to the Tashkent metro," Kaan Terzioglu, CEO at Veon Group, said in the release. "We are pioneering the digital operator model where we support our customers with connectivity and services for all of the 1,440 minutes that constitute each day. For the people of Tashkent that now includes the time they spend in transit in the city's metro."
