Automated testing and payment terminals installed in New Mexico DMVs

February 29, 2004

In January, more than 190 touchscreen computer terminals were installed in Department of Motor Vehicle offices throughout the state of New Mexico. The systems administer driving tests and accept payments for vehicle registration and drivers' license renewals.

At these self-service terminals, applicants can access tests for the various classes of licenses as well as pay fees by credit card or check. Both a magnetic swipe and a check reader have been seamlessly and securely integrated with the terminals to facilitate the payment options. The terminals also include a barcode scanner to read the barcode on licenses and other documentation. The state of New Mexico selected the kiosk solution provider SeePoint as the hardware supplier for the DMV installations.

Automation is providing a number of benefits to the DMV and residents of New Mexico. The state has more centralized control of testing, can easily update and randomize questions without the expense of printing new tests, can increase fraud prevention and offer tests in a variety of languages. The automated systems are also providing more efficient and better service to drivers and allow the DMV to serve more customers with less staff.

SeePoint teamed with its Albuquerque-based partner Abba Technologies to supply and support the DMV installations.
