There is a tendency among the business community to minimize the definition of corporate culture. Most of us have worked at companies along our career paths that strive to create an inviting workplace atmosphere but fall short of establishing a culture that represents the business. While most employees welcome a ping pong table and a stocked mini-fridge, corporate culture should represent the core values that are consistent with the people who work in your facility.
Indeed, a large part of that is aligning the company's values with those of the people who work there, things truly come together when the beliefs and behaviors of the company's workforce reflect the personality of the company. A good company culture brings people together, makes people happy and gives people pride in their workplace. Organizations spend a lot of time writing mission, vision and core value statements that aim to establish a foundation. Communicated effectively, these efforts will make a strong contribution to creating a corporate culture that is built to last.
The communication facet is where businesses most often fall short. We hear and see this from many of our new customers in the corporate community. The refrain is familiar: They lack the efficiency or manpower to create awareness. The obstacles are real, but not insurmountable.
There is still plenty of room in the world for the printed word. In the corporate communications world, it is an inefficient black hole that can quickly drag down even the most enthusiastic efforts. A large number of businesses worldwide still rely on breakroom postings and email circulations to communicate company information — but emails, like physical bulletins, often go unread, or even get automatically deleted!
Workers at their desks have tasks to focus on, and will casually ignore inside distractions. In the manufacturing sector, workers are typically prevented from fumbling with their mobiles on the production floor for safety and productivity reasons. And outside of dialing into meetings, remote workers of any organization aren't staying connected with what is happening at the office.
There are also companies that invested in digital signage, only to have it fade to black after stops and starts. This often happens because the company selected the wrong system, perhaps one with a difficult learning curve or a clunky user experience. Few corporations have digital signage experts on staff, so they are often out of luck if an advanced skill level is required to operate these systems.
The answer is finding the digital signage solution that makes it easy for the company to create awareness easily and broadly. Essential messaging and core value statements should be presented to all staff, both onsite and remote, across all relevant technology channels.
Your digital signage system needs not only deliver ease of use, but the software must be able to populate messages across large wall-mounted flat panels, tablet-sized screens by the elevator, intranet websites and even as screensavers on home office computers that provide a message of connection for your remote workers. This ensures that the messaging is reinforced beautifully and consistently across the organization — celebrating accomplishments, promoting a healthy corporate culture, building morale and helping employees feel more connected with one another.
More often than not, a corporate digital signage network fails because there was no communications strategy in place upon launch. A positive company culture that nurtures its employees is the key to its success, and digital signage offers a diverse platform to deliver motivating content that is a tributary of the company's core corporate culture, from digital displays in corporate offices to messages that help boost productivity on a manufacturing floor.
Has a production or shipping department met important KPIs or achieved important deadlines and goals? The ability to share business metrics along with positive reinforcement will go a long way in reinforcing corporate culture across the organization, and digital signage offers a way for everyone on the production floor to absorb that information through the day.
Digital signage is also the most effective platform for connecting people throughout your facility. Management plays an important role here when it comes to instilling corporate culture while celebrating the unique identities and accomplishments of employees. Digital signage makes it infinitely easier to praise the employee of the month, display the latest company kudos and wish team members a happy work-aversary — and to do it all in a way that gets seenand remembered.
There is also the sense of pride in sharing your company's achievements with employees around the company. Do you make a difference in the world? Toot the horn of awards won and latest community involvement and use screensavers to remind employees of upcoming meetings or special events. Share Power BI stats business metrics, employee birthdays and enlightening quotes from customers. These examples help enhance morale and give people purpose and pride in what they do and how they do it in your facility.
We all have tools at our fingertips that help us engage our team, and they all have their place, but the sheer volume of information on these platforms often leads to culture stories getting buried in the midst of getting our jobs done. Choosing the right software that helps you cut through the noise and prominently highlight the people and stories we want our teams to see. Building community and creating an environment that brings people together is more important than ever before, and digital signage is the most effective way to empower people to easily create and consume visual information within their facility, connecting teams and helping them shine.
