Digital signage unlocks revenue for ATM operators

Digital signage can unlock revenue for retail ATM operators and deployers, but managing the power and content has been a challenge. That may be changing as manufacturers make it easier to manage digital signage.

With rising cash costs, and continuing concern over cash usage trends, independent ATM operators are always looking for better methods to unlock revenue streams. Some have integrated cryptocurrency, dynamic currency exchange or financial kiosk features to encourage uses. Others have reexamined their location strategy to discover the most profitable retailers and stores to place their ATMs.

One underutilized method for generating revenue is through digital signage advertisements.

Several ATM operators have attempted to unlock this opportunity through digital topper displays, which showcase advertisements to customers approaching the ATM. Advertisers can purchase space on these displays for their products and services. However, this has been difficult for ATM operators to manage, as they need enough power to handle full-motion video displays as well as a content management system to push out the content.

Genmega is aiming to simplify this process through its recent partnership with Context Networks. Context Networks provides its Contextual Promotions Media Network that handles content delivery, compliance and revenue, which takes a lot of the work off operators' and deployers' shoulders.

Context Networks' advertising network lets brands purchase advertising directly to display on a variety of devices, ranging from gaming kiosks and ATM topper displays.

ATM Marketplace reached out to Wes Dunn, chief revenue officer at Genmega, in an email interview, about this partnership and how digital signage can unlock additional opportunities for ATM operators.

Q. What sort of digital signage solutions did Genmega provide prior to this partnership?

Dunn: We have always had a version of digital toppers, but this newest line of toppers runs off the mother board, and the ATM, thus not needing a different power source, communication source or even content delivery system to run the topper.

Q. What does Context Networks offer?

Dunn: Media and revenue streams for our ATM customers using these toppers is probably the biggest thing, but also taking the time and effort to figure out how to work with the toppers in conjunction with the ATM's motherboard.

Q. How can they manage this network?

Dunn: Here is the great thing about these toppers. Though Context has its own content management system, which is great, they are not reliant on any sort of special content system and can utilize the remote monitoring software Genmega has always provided for the ATMs, since the topper is hooked up directly to the ATM's operating system.

Q. There is mention of a future integration that will remove the need for topper displays. Can you expand on what this feature will offer?

Dunn: So two things there. Our Nova ATM has a split screen with the operations part on the bottom and the top can have full video running at anytime so they are working to make their content available on the top advertising portion of the Nova ATM. Second, all of our ATMs, since 2014, have the ability of running full motion video while they are idle, so they would love to tap into that as well.

Q. What are some of the best environments to use this signage? Retail stores, banks?

Dunn:We are specifically gearing these for retail, but it is up to the operators how they use them and where they use them.

Q. Anything else you'd like to add?

Dunn:I have been doing ATMs for 32 years now and have seen many try to do full motion video toppers on top of ATMs and fail, because they need additional power, they need additional communication and they need a dedicated media content provider. This new line of toppers eliminates that and provides a system that reduces or eliminates those costs, and can make an advertising rollout on ATMs deliver a very nice ROI.
