Australia-headquartered outdoor media company APN Outdoor announced today its plan to launch New Zealand's largest high-resolution digital billboard at Auckland Airport. The new screen is part of a wider digital development plan from APN Outdoor, which will see a massive overhaul of Auckland Airport's current advertising inventory, the company said.

Named Apollo, after the Greek god of light, APN Outdoor's new landmark site will measure 19.75 meters (64.8 feet) by 4.75 meters (15.58 feet), will offer advertisers 94 square meters of advertising space, and will be the largest digital billboard in New Zealand's history, the company said.

Apollo will be located on the corner of George Bolt and Tom Pearce Drives, a high-volume road intersection, providing advertisers with a daily audience of more than 55,000 travelers and airport visitors. Standing at 6.8 meters (22.3 feet) high, the screen will incorporate a contemporary design element featuring a 57-degree arc curvature. Additionally, Apollo will feature a screen resolution of 468 by 1944 pixels, "the highest for outdoor screens available in the world and capable of displaying 281 trillion colors," according to APN Outdoor.

"After launching New Zealand's first digital billboard last year plus our digital billboard network in July this year and seeing the success of both, we are really looking forward to taking our digital expansion to the next level through our redevelopments at Auckland Airport and specifically with the launch of Apollo," Phil Clemas, the general manager of APN Outdoor New Zealand, said in the announcement.

"As the largest digital billboard in the country with the highest quality resolution, we very are proud to be offering our clients a site that commands attention through its sheer size, not to mention the strength of its scale. On top of this, Apollo provides APN Outdoor advertisers with all the benefits of digital including minimal lead times, immediacy of posting, daypart messaging and mobile/social convergence. We are excited about bringing Apollo to market and continuing to lead the outdoor industry when it comes to all things digital."

APN Outdoor has chosen Daktronics as its technology supply partner for this Auckland Airport redevelopment.

Daktronics Region Manager Blair Robertson said in the announcement, "We have been a proud partner of APN Outdoor since launching New Zealand's first Digital Billboard in 2013, which utilized our leading-edge LED technology. Their digital development plans at Auckland Airport are amongst the most impressive I've seen in my 10 years at Daktronics, and we are very excited to be teaming up with them again to build this new landmark screen."

APN Outdoor's redevelopment of Auckland Airport is currently underway with a completion date scheduled for February 2015. Apollo will be live from December this year.
