Digital signage tees up mobile interactivity on the PGA Tour

Golf fans over the weekend were enabled to interact with digital signage screen via their mobiles phones to stay up to date on the latest scores at the PGA Tour's stop in Torrey Pines — where Tiger Woods sits atop the leaderboard as play resumes today.

The San Diego startup Locbit enables an interacctive element via QR codes that allowed players and guests at the PGA Tour in Torrey Pines to engage with the screens via their mobile phone. The addition of a QR code onto select screens allows visitors to scan and automatically receive the latest scores onto a mobile phone. This resolves the issue of crowds standing around the screens waiting for all scores to display, which is especially welcome given the rainy weather at Torrey Pines during this year's tournament, the company said.

Locbit also deployed a solution to allow personnel from screen operator NeoVision the ability to control content on its screens via their mobile phone. When Tiger Woods steps onto the green, managers use their mobile phone as a remote control to click and change the content on the massive screen, immediately displaying Woods' bio or latest scoring detail. When another player comes onto the course or another event begins, the control is again from a mobile phone versus a laptop or having to call into a control center to make the changes.

This is the third deployment of Locbit's platform at a PGA Tour, the company said. The latest deployment was at the 2012 World Challenge at Sherwood Country Club, which followed a deployment at the summer 2012 PGA AT&T National Golf Tournament.
