Touchscreen digital signage displays are bringing emergency alerts and campus information to students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, according to the Daily Nebraskan.

The digital signage system recently underwent a live field with the report of a "chemical smell" at the school's Architecture Hall on Tuesday:

"That chemical smell alert was cleared quickly," said Nate Morris, desktop solutions supervisor with UNL Information Technology Services. "But this incident shows how these digital signs give students a new way to receive emergency messages like this."

These digital screens have been installed at Memorial Stadium, the Campus Recreation Center, the College of Business Administration and other locations at UNL, and more locations will soon be added. According to Todd Lanham, coordinator for information technology at the Rec, the digital signage was installed at the Rec the Friday before spring semester began.

The signs use the digital signage content management software from Four Winds Interactive, with several university departments jointly purchasing the campus-wide software license for $87,000, according to the paper.
