American Bible Society calls on digital signage for outreach

The American Bible Society is calling on modern technology for a modern outreach to modern times.

The ABS's high-profile location on 61st and Broadway in New York City presents an opportunity for the nearly 200-year-old institution to reach out to young, urban followers and inspire local people with the Bible.

So the Society called on visualization solutions provider Barco and production and event management company Velocity Productions to create a series of dynamic digital signage video walls to engage a new generation of patrons with immersive spiritual programming.

"While the message of the Bible is unchanging, how we communicate that message is constantly changing," Geof Morin, chief communications officer and executive vice president of the ABS, said in a recent email. "When we redesigned our atrium, we chose touchscreens and digital displays to speak through today's technology to help people of all ages engage with God's Word and experience its life-changing message."

Barco and Velocity outfitted the newly redesigned atrium and gathering spots with 22 OverView NSL-4621 LCD displays in various configurations, presenting spiritual imagery and videos, live media streaming and signage for upcoming events and services.

"When we began the design process, our goal was to create a warm, welcoming space that was intriguing and presented the Bible in a subtle way," ABS Director of Arts and Media Bible Advocacy Matt Steinruck said in a case study on the Barco website. "Of course, it had to be technology-driven to meet the media-savvy needs of young as well as mature audiences. The Barco displays helped us create a community-type experience, inviting people inside to relax, connect and engage with unique, creative content in a bright and dynamic immersive environment."

The new venue was launched in conjunction with the 10-hour History Channel miniseries "The Bible" and with interactive content from "The American Bible Challenge" game show on GSN, followed by a series of Q Ideas conferences. The ABS also hosts a variety of live stream broadcasts from the space.

Velocity created several different palettes of content, utilizing several two-by-four Barco video wall arrays in key locations throughout the facility. The primary focal point of the Atrium's new interior is a four-by-two tiled video wall consisting of eight 46-inch Barco LCDs. Along 61st Street, displays show the same content outside as inside to attract passersby. A street-facing side of the building also features a two-by-two video wall.

"Because of American Bible Society's prominent location right next to Lincoln Center and Times Square, they knew they had to equal the quality and brilliance of these venues to stand out among the adjacent signage and facades," Velocity Productions President Brian Pirkle said in the case study. Velocity also remotely monitors and manages the displays via a VPN remote desktop from its Atlanta office, using any mobile device.

Scott Stremple, the vice president of sales – venues and hospitality for Barco North America's Projection division, said that the deployment refelcts well on Barco displays. "The choice by American Bible Society to use our LCD displays for such a dynamic venue is a testament to their versatility and performance when high impact and professional quality are the primary goals."
