When the Philadelphia-based supermarket chain The Fresh Grocer opened its first New Jersey store, near the campus of Rutgers University, it wanted to upgrade the shopping experience while retaining the "fresh, marketplace" appearance of its other stores.

The company asked Ping HD, a Denver-based provider of digital communication solutions for restaurant and retail services, to design, create and install a 15-screen digital network throughout the new location's fresh food and perishables sections.

Among the market's goals, according to a news release, were to expedite the long lines that typically form around the lunch ordering crowd, while increasing the profitability of each transaction with targeted up-selling and reducing human error in the ordering process.

Ping HD worked with the grocer's marketing department to create the graphic content and overall look of the artwork and layouts, the release said. In the deli area, for example, Ping HD installed two touchscreen kiosks, which run a custom program that allows customers to place an order and receive a receipt; the order is then sent wirelessly to a printer in the deli area for fulfillment. Ping manages and monitors the cloud-based network around the clock.

The kiosks have shown an impressive return on investment, Ross Del Romano, a spokesman for The Fresh Grocer, said in the release. "We are automating the entire sandwich ordering process," he said. "The kiosks are user-friendly, accurate and fast, and the customers are responding positively. Our customers are benefiting from an enhanced shopping experience that not only saves them time, but also is increasing our sales figures throughout the store, exceeding our expectations by far."
