U.S. Customs and Border Protection has deployed a virtual border patrol officer stationed in a self-service kiosk developed by researchers at the University of Arizona to facilitate border crossings, according to Scientific American.
CBP is deploying an updated version of the University of Arizona's kiosk to test its ability to help enroll applicants in its Trusted Traveler programs at the U.S.-Mexico border. The original was tested at the station from December to March.
The virtual officer in a kiosk is being used to process Trusted Traveler applicants, and uses speech recognition and voice anomaly technologies to flag questionable interviews for a follow-up interview with human CBP officers. Applicants conduct a "face-to-face" interview with the avatar officer in a display screen above the self-service kiosk.
