DISPLAX Interactive Systems has created a multitouch surface in the shape of a dome that allows consumers to interact with the contents displayed in the sphere by touching its surface.
The Multitouch Globe, according to a company press release, works better in some applications than a flat touchscreen surface because many natural designs are better displayed via dome shape. The company said it expects a variety of industries to be interested in the technology, including geographical information systems, museums, TV networks and visitor attraction or entertainment facilities.
DISPLAX's patent-pending projected capacitive multitouch technology is available as a transparent flexible polymer film that can be applied to non-conductive flat surfaces, giving them multitouch capabilities. Contents are displayed using a projector and a special "fish-eye" lens to adapt the projection to the spherical surface.
The technology will be on display for the first time at Integrated Systems Europe, Jan. 31-Feb. 2 in Amsterdam.
